The Keynesian Multiplier and the Pigou Effect under Substitution between Private and Public Consumption

چکیده
In this paper we present a fixprice model in which private and public consumption show some degree of substitution. We offer formulae for the Keynesian multiplier which depend on this degree of substitution. We also show that there is a Pigou effect and that, sometimes, this effect is larger than the Keynesian multiplier. * The author acknowledges comments from Alberto Alonso and financial support from SEJ2005-06167/ECON.

The Keynesian Multiplier Effect Reconsidered
The Keynesian multiplier effect is reinterpreted and several issues that may have misled assessments of the effect of fiscal spending are discussed. It is shown that even in the textbook Keynesian framework some transfer policy ‘reduces’ aggregate demand and that public works spending may completely crowd out private consumption. Useless public works are found to be equivalent to transfers alth...
متن کاملOptimal Public Expenditure with Inefficient Unemployment
This paper proposes a theory of optimal public expenditure when unemployment is inefficient. The theory is based on a matching model. Optimal public expenditure deviates from the Samuelson rule to reduce the unemployment gap (the gap between the current and efficient rates of unemployment). Such optimal “stimulus spending” is described by a formula expressed with estimable sufficient statistics...
متن کاملEstimating the Share and Elasticity of Substitution for Public and Private Health Expenditures in Iran
Background: The rate of substitution for private and public health expenditures is one of the factors that can explain the different effects of public and private health expenditures on health and life expectancy. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to estimate the return to scale, share, and elasticity of the substitution for public and private health expenditures in Iran. Methods: In th...
متن کاملElasticity of Intertemporal Substitution: An Investigation in Iran
We[1] present estimates of the Elasticity of Intertemporal Substitution (EIS) for Iranian households using synthetic cohort panels based on household micro-data. Results show significant difference with the common values used in Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) models which are originally based on estimated values for developed countries. We show that this difference has important ...
متن کاملPigou Meets Ramsey: Gender-Based Taxation with Non-Cooperative Couples
This paper explores the implications of gender-based income taxation in a noncooperative model of household behavior. In a first step, we show how gender-based taxes can act as Pigou taxes and correct the externality induced by a non-cooperative household equilibrium. We find that the first-best Pigou tax rules are solely determined by spouses’ relative marginal rates of substitution between th...
